Use and defense of the Debian trademark
The "Debian" name and logo are currently trademarked (in the US) and are owned by SPI Corporation. Debian (through SPI) lacks, however, a Policy regarding the use of trademark and 'baby' SPIs have started registering the trademark nation wide. The goal of the session is to focus some energy into trying to describe some of the issues related to trademark abuse and seek volunteers to relaunch the Trademark Comittee and get a Policy done.
The "Debian" name and logo are currently trademarked (in the US) and are owned by SPI Corporation. SPI's trademark Committee (created in 2003) has not been able to write up a Policy regarding permitted use of the trademark and actions to take in case of violation.
Through the last years several entities (both related and unrelated to Debian) have registered the trademark in different countries (such as Brazil, Japan, Norway and Spain). A number of 'debian' TLD have also surfaced, again, some connected to Debian and some others completely disconnected to it.
It is necessary now, four years later, to reassess the situation of the trademark and discuss which actions should SPI take in order to properly coordinate trademark registration nation-wide and pursue trademark infringement.
