How to reach world domination?

Advantages and shortcomings of Debian used in a worldwide IT infrastructure

The German Foreign Office is using Debian since 2004 and Debian is now the primary operating system on servers and notebooks. The talk will discuss both the advantages of using Debian and its limitations. The latter ones can be roughly categorized into installer defects, policy defects and defects of the package tools.

Using Debian as the main operating system has a lot of advantages: no need to count licenses, a large community, high quality software, high flexibility and much more. That was the reason for the Foreign Office to switch to Debian first on server installations and later on client installations, too. During the last years we have got some experiences that we would like to share and discuss now. We have found that Debian still lacks some features we need or that would be quite useful and I will explain them in more detail. I some cases we found only quick fixes and workarounds that cannot be easily integrated into Debian. Hopefully the discussion can help finding ways to solve the open problems.
