Software Quality Observatory: An EC Research Project
Discussion and evaluation of novel approaches to measuring Free Software quality
"Quality", mainly due to subjectivity, is a difficult concept. Yet it is something that, as developers and contributors to a Free Software project, we all have a notion of. The EC-funded "SQO-OSS" project is developing new approaches to quality assessment within the Free Software community through the assessment of public data sources: CVS/GIT/SVN, mailing lists, Bugzilla, etc. This session shall provide an opportunity for Debian developers to engage with an EC funded research project by discussing what is most important to them when evaluating quality.
In a world where Free Software projects compete for the scarce resources of users and developers, how /does/ a product get ahead? Ultimately by being of better quality, we'd hope. Quality observance within any software engineering effort is crucial to the long-term viability of the final product. The SQO-OSS (pronounced "squash" apparently) project is an EC-funded body of research and aims to deliver a platform for product quality assessment for evaluating metrics based on outputs from the software engineering process. In this session, some of the project's researchers shall present progress to date and present an opportunity for the Debian community to influence this work.
After an opening presentation of the project's research, the remaining discussion shall be open and loosely focussed on the following questions:
- What kinds of information are Debian developers interested in when evaluating quality? (e.g. `wc -l`, defect count, developer community growth etc.)
- How would developers like to receive information about defects in their work? (e.g. push or pull, email, web interface)
- For what purposes would Debian developers use a system such as SQO-OSS? (e.g. comparing package quality with upstream quality)
