Packing the data in and getting it back out

In an era of cheap terabyte hard drives and gigabyte memories, it is still useful to pack data in order to be able to access and update it in a reasonable amount of time. This talk describes techniques I use. While the examples will be in Perl, the techniques will apply to many other languages.
