Bhutan's journey towards open source.

Bhutan's initiatives to adopt open source software over the proprietary software

Bhutan's initiatives at adopting Free and Open Source Software as an alternative to proprietary software.

Bhutan is a small country with the population of 650,000. Any aspect of ICT started late in our country (early 90's) and since then we had been making lots of progress in applying ICT in developing our country.

Our country started out with the proprietary softwares like Windows operating system, Adobe products etc. and at this point of time, people prefer propritary softwares than Free and Open Source Software. In fact people doesnot have much ideas on the issues regarding Free and Open Source.

Its been 3 years, since we had a Research Unit here at Department of Information Technology<www.dit.gov.bt> working on localization of Dzongkha langauage in Open Source platform.

Dzongkha language is the official language of our country, Bhutan. Presently it is only supported in Open source softwares like Debian Linux, Dzongkha Linux, Open Office applications, Mozilla and Fire Fox browsers etc.

Our team released Dzongkha Linux (customized version of Morphix<www.morphix.org> which is a derivative of Debian Linux) on 2nd June, 2006. Since then we had been working on customizing the Debian Linux and presently is waiting for the release of the stable version of Debian Etch (Debian 4.0).

We had also conducted training on Debian Linux along with Dzongkha Linux from 4th December till 12th December 2006. We had also been looking at ways to make our people use open source softwares and is in the process of drafting Free and Open Source Policy to be adopted by our country.

The presentation looks at the process/events that has taken place since we started localization work here in Bhutan and what would be the done in the coming future regarding it.
