Munin
In doubt, graph it !
Learn about the new features that came in munin 2.0, that got shipped in Wheezy. (Zooming, How to scale, SSH transport, Async transport). It will then present some guidelines on how to write efficient plugins. The lecture will eventually be followed by a separate hands-on plugin writing workshop.
I'm planning to focus on how to scale the install, since it's one of munin2 new feature. Will use the munin install @debian.org as an example.
